SAFETY & OPERATIONS

Because great skiing begins with great decisions.

Safety at Pyrenees Heliski is far more than the equipment you carry or the briefing before boarding the helicopter.

It is a complete operational system built around preparation, continuous mountain assessment and conservative decision making.

From the first weather analysis before sunrise to the final landing of the day, every member of our team follows structured procedures designed to deliver the best possible skiing experience without compromising safety.

Every decision is made for one reason:
To return home after an unforgettable day in the mountains.

DAILY MOUNTAIN ASSESSMENT

Every day starts long before the first flight.

Before the helicopter even starts its engine, our guides and pilots have already analysed the day's conditions.

Each morning begins with an operational briefing where weather forecasts, avalanche information, snowpack observations, wind, temperatures and visibility are reviewed together.

This information is combined with months of local observations collected throughout the season.

Only then do we define:

  • 5
    today's terrain
  • 5
    landing zones
  • 5
    pickup locations
  • 5
    alternative plans
  • 5
    operational limits

Throughout the day, mountain conditions continue to be evaluated, allowing guides to adapt the programme whenever necessary.

Because mountains never stop changing.

HELICOPTER OPERATIONS

Built for mountain flying.

Heliskiing is only possible through close coordination between experienced mountain pilots and mountain guides.

Our flights are operated using the Airbus H130, internationally recognised as the benchmark helicopter for high-altitude mountain operations.

Powerful, reliable and specifically designed for alpine environments, it allows us to operate efficiently in demanding terrain while maintaining the highest operational standards.

Every landing site is individually assessed by both pilot and guide before each approach.

Communication between cockpit and guide continues throughout every flight.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT

PROFESSIONAL EQUIPMENT. INCLUDED IN EVERY PROGRAMME.

Every guest receives the same professional avalanche safety equipment used daily by our guides.

Before entering the mountains, every participant is individually equipped and checked by the guide.

Every guest receives:

  • 5
Avalanche Airbag Backpack: ARVA Ride 18
  • 5
Digital Avalanche Transceiver: Mammut Pulse Barribox S
  • 5
    RECCO reflector
  • 5
    Shovel
  • 5
    Probe
  • 5
    Emergency blanket
  • 5
    Emergency bivvy bag
  • 5
Radio for the last f the group

Equipment is inspected before every programme and explained during the mandatory safety briefing.

Technology alone does not improve safety.

Knowing how and when to use it does.

POWMAN

DECISIONS ARE NEVER BASED ON INSTINCT ALONE.

One of the things that sets Pyrenees Heliski apart is that our decisions go beyond individual experience.

Our team uses structured risk management tools, including POWMAN, a system specifically developed to support decision-making in avalanche terrain.

This method provides a structured way to assess the many factors affecting snowpack stability and helps reduce human bias in the decision-making process.

POWMAN does not replace a guide’s experience. It complements it.

Every descent is guided by a combination of:

  • 5
    Experience
  • 5
    Observations in the field
  • 5
    Weather conditions
  • 5
    Snowpack assessment
  • 5
    Operating procedures

OUR GUIDES

EXPERIENCE CANNOT BE IMPROVISED.

Every skiing group is led by internationally certified UIAGM / IFMGA Mountain Guides.

These are the highest professional qualifications in mountain guiding worldwide.

Beyond technical skiing, our guides are trained in:

  • 5
    avalanche forecasting
  • 5
    mountain rescue
  • 5
    wilderness medicine
  • 5
    helicopter operations
  • 5
    terrain management
  • 5
    group leadership
  • 5
    emergency procedures

Their education continues throughout their professional careers with regular technical training and operational refreshers.

SAFETY BRIEFING

EVERY GUEST RECEIVES A COMPLETE SAFETY BRIEFING.

Before the first flight, every participant attends a mandatory safety briefing.

This ensures that every guest understands how the operation will run before entering the mountains.

Topics include:

  • 5
    Helicopter boarding procedures
  • 5
    Safe movement around the aircraft
  • 5
    Avalanche equipment
  • 5
    Radio communication
  • 5
    Skiing procedures
  • 5
    Group management
  • 5
    Emergency procedures

The objective is simple:

Every guest should feel confident before stepping into the helicopter.

DYNAMIC RISK MANAGEMENT

THE MOUNTAIN DECIDES.

Unlike ski resorts, no itinerary is fixed.

Throughout the day our guides continuously reassess:

  • 5
    weather
  • 5
    snow quality
  • 5
    avalanche hazard
  • 5
    visibility
  • 5
    wind
  • 5
    group performance

This flexibility allows us to select the safest and highest-quality terrain available at every moment.

Sometimes this means changing valleys.

Sometimes changing aspects.

Sometimes changing the entire day's plan.

The objective is never to ski a specific run.

The objective is to ski the best mountain available safely.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE

Prepared for every scenario.

Although serious incidents are extremely rare, every programme operates under a predefined emergency response plan.

Pyrenees Heliski works in close cooperation with the Pompièrs d'Aran, the Val d'Aran Mountain Rescue Service. Their rescue helicopter, equipped with specialised rescue personnel, can typically reach our operating area in less than ten minutes.

Our emergency response includes:

  • 5
Immediate first response and patient stabilisation by UIAGM mountain guides.
  • 5
Continuous radio communication throughout the operation.
  • 5
Rapid helicopter deployment by the Pompièrs d'Aran Mountain Rescue Service.
  • 5
    Specialised mountain rescue personnel.
  • 5
    Coordination with regional emergency services.
  • 5
    Ambulance transfer when required.
  • 5
Direct access to the Hospital de Vielha.
